La Vatricania guentheri è un cactus colonnare sempreverde originario della Bolivia, tipico delle regioni aride comprese tra 800 e 1300 metri di altitudine. Presenta fusti eretti e cilindrici che possono superare i due metri di altezza, con numerose coste verticali e marcate, fino a ventisette, lungo le quali si trovano areole ricche di spine robuste e ciuffi di peli lanosi. Cresce lentamente e raggiunge la maturità dopo molti anni; in età adulta sviluppa un cefalio laterale, una struttura lanosa di colore rossastro che percorre il fusto e da cui emergono i fiori. I fiori, di grandi dimensioni e dalla forma tubolare a imbuto, hanno colore bianco o crema con riflessi giallastri e compaiono soprattutto all’inizio dell’estate. La pianta è considerata rara e in natura è classificata come quasi minacciata, ma è molto apprezzata come esemplare ornamentale per la sua forma scultorea e l’aspetto imponente.
