L’Ilex crenata, noto come agrifoglio giapponese, è un arbusto sempreverde caratterizzato da una crescita densa e compatta. Le sue foglie sono piccole, ovali e di un verde scuro, con margini dentellati, che conferiscono alla pianta un aspetto lucido e ornamentale. Può essere coltivato come siepe o come esemplare isolato.
Il portamento è eretto, e la pianta può raggiungere un’altezza di 1-3 metri, a seconda delle condizioni di coltivazione e della potatura. Fiorisce in primavera, producendo fiori bianchi poco appariscenti, seguiti da bacche nere o bluastre che possono attrarre gli uccelli. Predilige esposizioni ombreggiate o parzialmente soleggiate e si adatta bene a diversi tipi di terreno. È una scelta popolare per giardini formali e per la creazione di bordure.
